The most frequent side effects of anesthesia are postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). It is important, therefore, that clinicians identify patients at high risk for PONV and administer appropriate prophylactic therapy.
Be sure to attend the corporate lecture, “Risk Assessment and Prophylactic Therapies for the Prevention of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting,” on Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to learn more about PONV and therapeutic strategies to prevent it. The lecture offers 1 CE Credit and is supported by an educational grant from Baxter.
In the first part of the lecture, participants will learn about the negative outcomes associated with PONV, such as patient distress, postoperative morbidity, and increases in healthcare costs. Clinical guidelines for preventing and managing PONV will be discussed and attendees will also learn how to assess patient-, surgery-, and anesthesia-related factors to determine risk for PONV.
The second portion of the lecture offers a comparative analysis of therapeutic strategies for the prevention of PONV in high-risk patients, including combination and multimodal antiemetic therapies that target multiple neurotransmitter systems. Participants will be able to evaluate the efficacy of various therapeutic strategies for PONV prophylaxis.
