About Let the Record Show

In the preface, 2001 AANA President Larry Hornsby, CRNA, BSN, writes of Let the Record Show, “This collection of Gene’s columns provides a candid look at the challenges and changes to nurse anesthesia practice over the years.”  Topics covered run the gamut of legal issues faced by the profession.

Blumenreich began writing his highly popular AANA Journal Legal Briefs columns in 1984, one year after he became AANA general counsel.  In the foreword, Blumenreich describes Let the Record Show as “the story of my education,” explaining that during the early years “…when my column was due, I ran a computerized search for the phrase ‘nurse anesthetist’ or a variation. Then I would collect the cases, ignore the ones that were not actually about anesthesia, and read the rest. Thus, I learned what issues were important to nurse anesthetists because I saw the cases they brought, the cases brought against them, and the cases that dealt with what they did (and infrequently, did not do).“

About the Author

Prior to teaming up with the AANA in 1983 and creating the Legal Briefs column a year later, Blumenreich practiced briefly in Washington, D.C., then moved to Boston where he practiced as a business lawyer with Fine & Ambrogne (1968-1990), Powers and Hall (1990-1995), and Nutter McClennen and Fish (1995-2008). Blumenreich has been Of Counsel to Laredo & Smith in Boston since January 2009. Besides the AANA, Blumenreich’s clients have included various banks, software and technology companies, and manufacturers, and his work has ranged from simple contracts to mergers, acquisitions, and public offerings of securities.
